It’s when I can’t decide whether I want to lie on the couch and drink wine or eat chocolate* that I turn to self improvement quotes to pull me out of my funk. Because really, if that’s all I want to do, it’s because I’m in a funk and I want to avoid my responsibilities and commitments, or I want to make myself feel better with some self indulgence.
I’ve got nothing against a bit of self-care and treats. But this is different. This is when you just want to give up on life for a little bit, and more specifically, you want to give up on improving yourself.
Look, it’s hard to stay motivated. It’s hard to keep doing the things that you know are good for you, especially when they don’t give you immediate gratification. But sometimes, it’s something as simple as a pretty picture and a well worded quote, that will remind you of why you’re on this path of self improvement. It might be tough right now, but hang in there, you know that your personal development efforts now, will pay off well into your bright future.
Self Improvement Quote 1
Hal Elrod is the author of The Miracle Morning and this book has changed my life. I now get up at 4am most days, and I feel good doing so! I spend time on myself, taking time to do the personal development things that I’ve always talked about, but never got round to. I love a bit of practical, no-nonsense truth in my life. It’s statements like this one that give me the impetus to keep on going.
Remember, the moment you accept total responsibility for everything in your life is the moment you claim the power to change anything in your life. Hal Elrod
Self Improvement Quote 2
Aren’t elephants just the most beautiful creatures in the world? I have a soft spot for them; especially when I see how badly they’re treated in some South East Asian countries due to the tourism demand. They’re such large and strong creatures, yet they can be broken and not know just how strong they are. Much like us. We have no idea of our own potential, abilities, capacity and tenacity.
The question isn’t who is going to let me, it’s who is going to stop me. Ayn Rand
This quote, even though it can be found in many different places on the internet and on posters and t-shirts, cannot be found in any of Rands novels. It looks like it’s a bit of a mash up of a piece of dialogue in the book ‘The Fountainhead’. Just thought you might like to know that.
Self Improvement Quote 3
At the center of your being you have the answer; you know who you are and you know what you want. Lao Tzu
This quote helps me to remember that I have all the answers I need within me. By the same token, it reminds that I’m enough, just as I am. Sometimes, just some quiet contemplation or meditation is all I need.
Self Improvement Quote 4
Okay, okay! Yes, I am a crazy cat lady. Well, I would be if my husband wasn’t allergic to them. :-/
Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says I’ll try again tomorrow. Mary Anne Radmacher
Even though we get to the end of the day feeling discouraged and battle weary, it’s quotes like this that remind me what true courage looks like. It’s picking myself up day after day after day.
Self Improvement Quote 5
This is a quote from Jordan Belfort of Wolf of Wall Street fame. (Does the wolf picture make sense now?)
The only thing standing between you and your goal is the bullshit story you keep telling yourself as to why you can’t achieve it. Jordan Belfort.
How’s that for a no-nonsense approach to personal development? I like it.
Self Improvement Quote 6
I’ve only recently discovered the poet Stephanie Bennett-Henry, a young woman with words that seem to speak straight to the heart.
Life is tough, my darling, but so are you.
Such a painfully simple quote, yet it speaks so much encouragement with a lashing of love. I’m someone’s darling, but boy, I’m also tough.
Obviously, there are a gazillion more quotes just like these. But I wanted to share with you, the ones that resonate with me. Do you have any that give you a kick up the pants when you need it?

*Yes I know there are some people that enjoy both wine and chocolate… at the same time… but I’m not one of those people. I think it works if you’re a merlot and dark chocolate lover. I’m more of a sweet riesling and milk chocolate kinda gal myself.
Want to start your own personal development blog? I highly recommend it and this series walks you through all the steps.
